Should I Monitor My Child's Internet Usage?

On May 5, 2010, in News, by admin

I would imagine that the majority of families now have at least one computer in their home, along with an internet connection.

I would also guess that many families have several computers that can all connect to the world wide web.

What this means is that there are now a great number of children who have access to the net when they are in their own homes.

A large number of these children will have their computers in their bedrooms where their parents cannot see what they are doing.

Would you be happy if your son or daughter was surfing the web and you didn’t know what they were searching for, or who they were talking to?

(Most kids do actually search for porn and a great many do talk to strangers).

Should you, therefore, monitor your kid’s every move on the internet? (I think that may be overkill)

Should you install a keylogger on their computer or limit the amount of time they spend on it? (I don’t see a problem with either)

Should you in fact move their computer into the living room where you can monitor their every action, or should you afford them some privacy? (I monitor my youngest but let my older kids have some privacy)

Only you can decide what is right for your child but this topic does throw up many questions about privacy and trust doesn’t it?

Ultimately, it is about your kid’s safety so make sure you choose how to deal with this issue wisely.
